Richard Tuttle   (1941* USA) «Paper» –
Richard Tuttle wünschte sich diese Bezeichnung für unsere Ausstellung. Papier als Ausstellungstitel deutet an, dass Zeichnungen in dieser Präsentation von Werken und Werkgruppen den Schwerpunkt bilden. Offen bleibt, was mit Papier sonst noch unternommen werden kann und von Richard Tuttle sind erstaunliche und überraschende Formulierungen zu erwarten.

Tatsächlich ist die Zeichnung im Schaffen von Richard Tuttle geradezu das Zentrum der künstlerischen Unternehmungen. «Art is discipline and discipline is drawing. Drawing will change before art will.» (1968 R.T.) Die Zeichnung ist Weg und Bewegung und sie führt von einem zuweilen bescheidenen Ausgangspunkt zum gültigen Werk.

Zeichnungshefte, Zeichnungsblöcke sind für Tuttle Arbeitsorte. Mehr noch als das Studio sind sie immer zuhanden, stehen stets und überall zu Diensten. Sie offerieren Resonanzräume der Imagination.

Konfigurationen und Zeichen markieren gleichermassen Tiefendimension, wie vertikale und horizontale Ausdehnung. Die bezeichneten Heftseiten bilden so Fluchten und Sequenzen. Striche und Flecken entwickeln andeutungsweise Regelmässigkeiten, die in der Folge variiert oder aber wieder verworfen werden. Einmal herausgelöst aus der Spiralheftung verbleibt die Perforierung und die «Familienähnlichkeit» als deutlicher Nachweis der Herkunft der Blätter. Zuweilen ist die Abfolge wichtig. Sie repräsentiert den Entstehungsprozess, veranschaulicht die Faktoren Zeit und Reflexion. Eine besondere Präsentationsform als Zeichnungsfolge oder als Werkblock wird solchen Blättern in der Ausstellung zugewiesen. Aus vielen Teilen kann oftmals eine grosse Arbeit entstehen. Immer spielt die sorgfältige, für diesen Zweck geschaffene Rahmung eine wichtige Rolle. Alle Details sind abgestimmt und intendiert. Präzise Anweisungen betreffen die Hängung und die Festlegung der Distanz vom Fussboden zum «Center Point» des Papierbogens.

Diese Beobachtungen verdeutlichen, dass sich Richard Tuttle’s Zeichnungen in tragfähiger Weise auf die Charakteristiken und die Historie einer genuin künstlerischen Ausdrucksform beziehen. Auch die besondere Betrachtungs- und Wahrnehmungsweise, die im Verlauf der Ausdifferenzierung des Mediums entstanden ist, wird in Anspruch genommen.

Der lange gemeinsame Weg des Künstlers mit der Galerie hatte oft und nachhaltig mit dem zeichnerischen Schaffen von Richard Tuttle zu tun. 1974 fand in unseren Räumen in Zürich die erste Einzelausstellung mit den «Heavy Wire Pieces» statt, Werke die als Linien aus einem festen Material beschrieben werden können. 1976 übergab uns der Künstler 289 Blätter. Es waren dies sämtliche Zeichnungen, die er in seinem Studio finden konnte. Es folgte 1977 in der Kunsthalle Basel eine legendäre Ausstellung mit diesem Bestand. 1979 konnten wir mit der Unterstützung von Freunden eine umfangreiche Publikation vorstellen, in der alle Blätter abgebildet sind:
«List of Drawing Material of Richard Tuttle & Appendices». Form und Inhalt des Buches haben Geschichte geschrieben.

Die Zeichnungs-Retrospektive, die 2010 in der Galerie gezeigt wurde, war ein eindrucksvoller Rückblick auf einen herausragenden Aspekt der Arbeit von Richard Tuttle. Die aktuelle Schau orientiert nun über den gegenwärtigen überaus vitalen Stand der Dinge.
