Continuity is a catchword that aptly describes an important aspect of our gallery’s activities. In 1969 we took up our work as gallerists and since 1971 have observed the June date of Art Basel year after year as exhibitors.
Starting in 1984, we decided to conceive our stand as a curated exhibition, as an exhibition offering a special focal point in the overall art year. We believe that the profile and stance of a gallery should be visible and comprehensible in the exhibited works as well as in the design of the exhibition.
For our participation at this year’s fair, there is a change to report concerning the continuity of our presence at Art Basel. We gave up the location that we had occupied for many years. Following the numerous relocations undertaken by the fair management in 2015, it seemed imperative to position our exhibition stand in a context more befitting of our history and our program. Quite literally, we changed sides. As in the past, you can still find us in Hall 2.0, but now at the corner stand B4 facing the corridor.
Continuity is also something we wish to maintain in our selection of exhibited works this year. We put a special emphasis on the Italian painter Antonio Calderara (1903-1978) with a small retrospective presentation of his oeuvre. Back in 1969, we first showed the works of this exceptional master of light, transparency and atmosphere. We shared a warm and sincere friendship with Antonio Calderara. Until his death, we staged regular presentations of his paintings and watercolors and have subsequently continued to periodically reference this wonderful life’s work. In October of this year, the new LAC museum in Lugano is dedicating a major survey show to the artist and in February 2017 another such show will open at Kunstmuseum Winterthur.
Richard Tuttle (*1941) is presently being honored by the Metropolitan Museum in New York with a solo presentation of new works. In addition, groups of works were produced for Kunstmuseum Winterthur that convincingly attest to the richness and vitality of his art
(until June 24). Our stand at Art Basel features significant early and current works by the artist, whom we have represented since 1974.
Wall Drawing 304 by Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) is installed in the new building of Kunstmuseum Basel. This major work from 1977 was recently acquired by the museum. In 1975, we held our first exhibition of his works. Two wall drawings are currently on view in our gallery in Zurich and of course his works can also be found at our stand.
