CONTRASTES II
In Memory of Robert Wilson (1941–2025)

The current exhibition, CONTRASTES II, brings together three artists: Alighiero Boetti (1940–1994), Giorgio Griffa (born 1936), and Giulio Paolini (born 1940).

The gallery shares a long and intense history with these artists. Regular visits to galleries and studios in Milan and Turin shaped the 1970s, as did the long summer days spent in Spoleto with many Italian avant-garde artists.

The gallery first presented Alighiero Boetti (later Alighiero e Boetti) and Giorgio Griffa in the1972 group exhibition “Objects, Projects, Plans – Conceptual Art from Italy”. This was fol-lowed by solo exhibitions with Boetti in 1974, 1977 and 1982, and with Griffa in 1973, 1975, 1978, 1981 and 2017. The gallery's collaboration with Giulio Paolini continues to this day, hav-ing hosted nine solo exhibitions of his work since 1973.

On 31 July 2025, Robert Wilson (1941–2025), an artist, theater visionary, and friend, passed away. An exhibition room is therefore dedicated to him.

Robert Wilson's productions are events. Wilson first visualized many of his ideas in the form of drawings; language came later. His visionary view of theater was thus one shaped by the per-spective of the visual arts. Performance, installation, drawing and sculpture provided essential foundations, shaped by the avant-garde movements of the 1960s. Robert Wilson always saw himself as an artist, right up until the end. The three works on paper from 1981 and 1991 im-pressively demonstrate the visual power of focusing on different shades of gray created with graphite and pencil. As with his stage productions, Wilson creates form, space, and move-ment through the interplay of light and shadow.

In 1982, 1989, 1991 and 2000, the Annemarie Verna Gallery exhibited Robert Wilson's draw-ings, furniture, installations and videos, most of which were related to opera productions such as “The Golden Windows,” “Orlando,” “Lohengrin,” “Rheingold,” “Deafman Glance,” and “14 Stations”.
